Welcome to Kalimpong

Kalimpong is a hill station in the Mahabharat Range (or Lesser Himalaya) in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located at an average elevation of 1,250 metres (4,101 ft). The town is the headquarters of the Kalimpong subdivision, a part of the district of Darjeeling. The Indian Army's 27 Mountain Division is on the outskirts of the town. Kalimpong is known for its educational institutions many of which were established during the British colonial period. Kalimpong, on a ridge overlooking the Teesta River, is a tourist destination owing to its temperate climate and proximity to popular tourist locations. Horticulture is important to Kalimpong: It has a flower market notable for its wide array of orchids; nurseries, which export Himalayan grown flower bulbs, tubers and rhizomes.

1. Cactus Garden - Kalimpong

The Exotic Cactus Collection nursery at Atisha Road, 2 kms off Kalimpong town. It has the largest collection of cacti, in the whole of Asia, holds a place of pride for the citizens, Christened the PineView Nursery, it has over 1,500 varieties of cactuses.

2. Tharpa Choling Monastery

Tharpa Choling Monastery is a Gelugpa monastery situated at the hilltop in Kalimpong. The monastery was founded by Domo Geshe Rinpoche Ngawang Kalsang in 1912. At the request of the Tibetan merchants and Bhutanese leaders living in Kalimpong to establish a monastery there

3. Shri Mangal Dham, Kalimpong

Spread over a sprawling 2 acres in the peaceful locales of Kalimpong, this temple-cum-prayer hall was built in the memory of Shri 108 Mangaldasji Maharaj. Based on the principle of social upliftment, Mangal Dham is home to the institution that promotes schools, temples and orphanages for those in need. Mangal Dham temple is dedicated to Guruji Shri Mangaldasji, who first arrived here in 1940s.

4. Deolo Hill Point

Deolo Hill is one of the two hills that the town of Kalimpong stands between. Kalimpong is situated on a ridge connecting the two hills, Durpin and Deolo. The hill is 1,704 metres (5,590 feet) above msl and is the highest point of Kalimpong town. The hill is located north east of the town. Three water reservoirs, two of which serve as the primary drinking water source to the town are present atop this hill.

5. Army Golf Club - Kalimpong

A 9 hole golf course perched on a hill side with fabulous views this Army course will delight you with its quirks & twists. Its a challenging layout as the undulating hilly terrain makes it difficult to gauge distances & one is often left short or long of the target. Located enroute to the famous Durpin monastery this course is open to visitors. It is located at a elevation of about 4000 feets.

6. Kalimpong Arts & Craft Centre

Kalimpong art and craft centre is amongst the cultural attraction of the subdivision. Located at the epicentre of the town the centre looks to compliment the tradition and the customs which was given to the people here by their ancestors.Kalimpong art and Craft centre in fact is a courtesy of Catherine Graham and it was in 1897 he founded the centre to uplift the social pattern of the common people.

7. Dr. Graham's Home

Dr. Graham’s Homes is quite unlike any other school. Proudly safeguarding the name of its founder and his ideals, this small island of hope and love looks with confidence to the challenges ahead, never quite relinquishing the invisible threads tying it to the great dream that was started more than a hundred years ago by Rev. John Anderson Graham.

8. Pedong Monastery

Pedong lies 20 km east of Kalimpong on the way to Lava at an altitude of 1,240 metres (4.071 feet). The town, which is located on a ridge, commands a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga and the Himalayan mountains. The town is divided into two parts, Upper Pedong and Lower Pedong. Pedong lies on the historic Silk Road that connects India to Lhasa via the Jelepla Pass.

9. Durpin Dara Hill

Durpin Dara is one of the two hills (dara in local language) connected by a ridge on which the town of Kalimpong stands. The hill is 1,372 metres (4,501 feet) above mean sea level and is located south west of the town. The hill commands a panoramic view overlooking the town of Kalimpong, the snow clad Himalayan ranges of West Sikkim, the Teesta River and its valleys and the Jelepla Pass in the distance.

10. Crookety House

On the 2d of November, 2010 members of the forum arrived to Kalimpong in the Eastern Himalayas and stayed in the Kruketi mansion, where Elena Roerich spent last 7 years of her life. Guests were met with kindness by representatives of the Italian community of Living Ethics, to whom this house belongs now. Ferenza and Francesca told about the community of Living Ethics in Italy and about the Roerich’s house reconstruction.

11. Zong Dhog Palri Fo Brang

Zang Dhok Palri Phodang is a Buddhist monastery in Kalimpong in West Bengal, India. The monastery is located atop Durpin Hill, one of the two hills of the town. It was consecrated in 1976 by the visiting Dalai Lama. The monastery houses many rare scriptures that were brought into India after the invasion of Tibet in 1959. It also houses the 108 volumes of the Kangyur.
