Welcome to Pelling

Around 10 kms from Gyalshing (District Headquarter), Pelling is today emerging as the second biggest tourist destination in the state after Gangtok. Although in itself it is little more than a strip of road lined with hotels, its main USP is the breathtaking view it offers of the Khangchendzonga and surrounding ranges, as well as the easy access it provides to tourist spots in the area. Pemayangste monastery is less than a kilometre from Pelling, while a 40 minute walk on the hill opposite the monastery takes you to Sanga Choling monastery built in 1697, one of the first in the state. Pelling�s serene environment and picturesque setting is perfect for nice nature walks and small treks. A destination for all seasons, Pelling has hotels and resorts catering to all budgets.

   Local Sightseeing Places around Pelling

1. Helipad - Pelling

Helicopters can connect Pelling with Gangtok on request. The helipad is located on the uppermost reaches of Pelling. This helipad has become the center of attration of tourist as the view of Mount Kanchanjunga is perfect from here. It is within 2 kms from the main town of Pelling.

2. Khecheopalri Lake

About 28kms from Pelling at a height of 6000ft is Khecheopalri Lake which is the most holy and wish fulfilling. According to Buddhist belief the lake is the emanation of goddess Tara blessed by Guru Rempoche. Local folk tales say the lake got migrated from elsewhere and stayed in the valley.

3. Khangchendzonga Waterfalls

About 28kms from Pelling and 5kms before Yuksam is Khangchendzonga Waterfalls which is situated at a sharp curve on the road side. The falls being very big in size and equally attractive through out the year, it has become one of the leading tourist spots in west Sikkim.

4. Pemayangtse Monastery

About 2kms from Pelling, you can visit the principal monastery belonging to Ngingma sect (one of the four sects of Tibetan Buddhism) which was built in the year 1705 AD. One of the first and few oldest monastery in Sikkim, it was built by Gyalwa Lhatsun Namkha Jigme.The main amongst three monks, who consecrated the first religious king of Sikkim at Yuksam in 1641AD.

5. Rabdentse ruins

Rabdentse was acknowledged to be the second capital of Sikkim. With the passing time, Rabdentse was desolated and ravages of time turned the royal capital into ruins. Located in West Sikkim district, Rabdentse is regarded as an archeological site that truly peeps into the history of Sikkim. Rabdentse ruins have been preserved by the Indian Archeological Society.

6. Rimbi water fall

About 12kms away from Pelling and about 5kms further down from Darap village is Rimbi River Bank which falls on the way to Khecheopalri and Yuksam where the main attractions are the river, water falls, oldest Hydel power station, Sewaro rock garden and the village. Water falls is spectacular in summer that attract many waterfalls lovers.

7. Geyzing - Town

Geyzing, also known as Gyalshing, is one of the most important towns in West District of Sikkim as well as the district headquarter. The place is also known as Gyalshing among locals and is located 10 kms before Pelling. With increased tourism activity, Pelling has gained substantial importance and facelift. Geyzing is the most important trading and commercial town of the area.

8. Darap Cherry Resorts

Darap is a small village in West Sikkim at an altitude of 5,100 feet or 1550 meter. The village is just 7 kilometres from the tourist hub of Pelling offering peaceful environment as well as similar sightseeing options as in Pelling. The village has come up in recent years as one of the major village tourism and offbeat travel destination of Sikkim.

9. Sewaro Rock Garden

Sewaro rock Garden developed by the tourism department of Sikkim with richly maintained rocks, gardens, pools, zigzag foot paths and interesting recreation amenities like swimming yard, viewpoints and cafeteria. This has now come up as one of the popular picnic spot for the locals in Sikkim where many local picnic parties arrive in winter.

10. The Singshore Bridge

The grand Singshore Bridge is touted as the highest bridge in Sikkim and the second highest gorge bridge in Asia. An architectural brilliance with a length of 198 m, the bridge is built in between two hills. An extremely popular tourist spot, the bridge is about 5 km away from Pelling.

11. Visit Yuksom

Yuksum today is an attractive tourist destination and the base for some of the most exciting treks in the region. It is also of great historical importance to the Sikkimese with the first Chogyal crowned here in 1642. There are many places of religious and historical interest.

12. Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

The Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary lies in the south west corner of the West Sikkim district. Spreading over 104 sq. km, across the razor sharp Singalila Range, which forms the natural international border with Nepal. In the South the Rambong Khola separates it from West Bengal.

13. Uttarey Sikkim

You can reach Uttarey from Pelling, Gezing or Dentum. On your way you will pass Singsor bridge, said to be the second highest bridge in Asia. The height of Uttarey is about 6600ft. Uttarey is famous for its tranquility and natural beauty. The place provides beautiful view to the Himalayan mountains.

14. Tashiding monastery

Tashiding is a small village on a hilltop near Pelling. The Tashiding monastery belongs to the Nyingmapa order and is highly revered among the people of Sikkim. Build on the top of the hill and looming over the Rathong and Rangit river, the monastery can be seen from far and wide. It is believed that even a slight glimpse of the monastery can cleanse mortals of all sins.

15. Legship Hot water Spring

Legship gateway to West Sikkim is slowly gaining in popularity. On the left banks of the river Rangit is a Shiva temple known as the Kirateshwar Mahadev Mandir, which has many mythological episodes of the Mahabharata attached to it. The main festival of the temple, Bala Chaturdesi is observed in December each year. Other temples dedicated to Lord Rama and Durga are also found here.
